Kati Killa The Real Ancient Equator with Calimatours
Kati-Killa is a hill considered by the Kitu-Kara culture as an ancient sacred site. In the last of the twentieth century, on the top at 2650m was found archeological evidence built during the Integration Period 800 A.D. Two circular platforms that represent a moon eclipse mark the exact Equator! 0°0'0'' latitude; measurements taken recently with G.P.S. The platform that represents the earth is 120m wide and the platform that represents the moon is 8m wide. On equinoxes sun breaks over Cayambe snow capped mountain and illuminate this platforms.
Knowledge of astronomy was very important in the Andean Cosmo vision which still continues nowadays. Kati-Killa is located in an exclusive view point. Twice in the year March 20th and September 22nd previous the equinoxes, Yachaks (shaman) with people of the community and foreigners hike up during the night to have a ritual around the sacred fire, expecting the equinox.
